President Shapton called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday May 6, 1987 in the Faculty Lounge of the Memorial Union.

Roll: Twenty two members/alternates were present. Absent were: Alan Brokaw, Dae S. Young, Bruce Haataja, Spencer Hill, Terry Monson, Philip Parks, David Carlson, David Sprague, and Jorma Kalliokoski.

Visitors: Linda Belote, Carl Anderson, Elizabeth Flynn, Duane Abata, David Cruise, Calvin Gale, David Karnosky and Jan Miner.

Committee Reports

A. Curricular Policy - Appendix D ( Available by Request from the Senate Office). Submitted Proposal 6-87, Ph.D. in Forest Science . The Senate approved this proposal.

B. Instructional Policy - Appendix E (Available by Request from the Senate Office).

Submitted drop policy questionnaire. Pointed out that changes in the repeat rule and GPA computation for repeated courses are being considered.

C. Institutional Evaluation - Appendix F (Available by Request from the Senate Office).

Submitted Proposal 7-87, Task Force on Quality of University Life . The Senate passed this proposal unanimously.

D. Budget - No report.

E. Faculty Fringe Benefits - No report.

F. Elections

Elections were held for these committees. These were general elections, university athletics, and sabbatical leave.

G. Faculty Handbook - No report.

H. Planning - Covered as New Business

I. General Education

The committee continues to work on solutions to the problems associated with thematic clusters. Concrete proposals will be made in the Fall of 1987.

J. Computer Fee Policy - Appendix G (Available by Request from the Senate Office).

President Shapton stated that committee should produce a proposal and guidelines for the establishment of another group that will develop a campus-wide computer strategy.

New Business - Appendices H, I, J (Available by Request from the Senate Office).

The long-range planning committee submitted three reports. Mr. David Cruise then gave a short briefing on current plans for the renovation of the Memorial Union Building.

 

A motion was called to adjourn the meeting. Motion approved.
